Ian Friend

For more than 30 years, Ian Friend has developed subtle and evocative works on paper that reflect his longstanding engagement with jazz, poetry and architecture. Using pigments, inks, crayons and gouaches as his media, Ian builds up images over months and years, resulting in delicately layered yet powerful works which cross the terrain of his lived experience.

Born in Eastbourne, England, Friend first came to Melbourne in 1985 to take up an artist-in-residence at the Victorian College of the Arts. He has since lectured in drawing and painting in several Australian universities while maintaining his art practice and exhibiting in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

His works have been included in major curated exhibitions throughout Australia and can be found in more than 40 public collections at state, national and international level.
